What is a Clinical Psychologist?

A common question is: “What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychologist?”.

Both types of psychologist are registered and trained to assess and treat mental health issues.

However there are a few key differences:

Clinical Psychologists Have Additional Qualifications and Training

  • A clinical psychologist must complete a postgraduate course specialising in clinical psychology (Masters or Doctorate level) and a supervised registrar program.

  • This training includes supervised placements and completing an honours and masters research thesis, which involves undertaking original research in the area of psychology.

  • From start to finish, becoming a clinical psychologist takes a minimum of 8 years.

  • However, general psychologists do not undertake accredited education and training to specialise in an endorsed area of specialised practice.

Clinical Psychologists Are Recognised Under National Law

  • Clinical Psychologists are recognised under the National Law, which also records their advanced qualifications and supervised practice in the general register of psychologists. The title “clinical psychologist” is protected and may only be used by those psychologists on the register.

  • Clinical Psychologists receive an Area of Practice Endorsement (AoPE) after their postgraduate training, highlighting their additional qualifications and advanced competencies.

  • The Accreditation Standards for Psychology published by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council outline these competencies, which ensure that clinical psychologists are equipped with the skills needed to handle complex psychological issues.

Clinical Psychologists Specialise In Complex Mental Health Issues

  • Clinical psychologists are trained in the assessment and diagnosis of mental illnesses and psychological problems and are qualified to provide advice in clinical and compensation areas

  • Clinical psychologists are trained to work with individuals who have serious mental health issues such as depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric conditions.

You can find out more about clinical psychologists on the Australian Clinical Psychology Association.
