How to Connect with Your Inner Wisdom

What is ‘Wise Mind’ in DBT

Instead of just reacting based on feelings or only thinking with cold logic, Wise Mind is that balanced place inside you that knows what’s best for you. It’s like your inner voice that guides you in a calm, thoughtful way, helping you make choices that feel right and true to who you are.

What is ‘Inner Wisdom’?

Inner wisdom refers to an intuitive understanding or deep sense of knowing that comes from within, rather than from external sources. This wisdom is not solely based on past experiences or acquired knowledge, but rather on a more profound connection to one’s authentic self, values, and inner truths.

Example Visualisation Exercises for Inner Wisdom

Spiral Staircase Meditation

Imagine yourself walking up a spiral staircase, each step bringing you closer to your inner wisdom. As you ascend, feel the weight of stress and confusion gently falling away with each step. The higher you climb, the quieter your mind becomes, allowing you to focus on your breathing and the steady rhythm of your steps. At the top of the staircase, you find a peaceful, quiet space filled with light. Here, take a moment to ask yourself any question or reflect on a decision you need to make. Allow the clarity and insight from this serene place to guide you, trusting that your Wise Mind will reveal the answers you need.

The Bridge Visualisation

Start by imagining yourself standing on the edge of a peaceful river. On one side of the river is your Emotion Mind—a place filled with strong feelings, impulses, and emotional reactions. On the opposite side is your Reasonable Mind—where logic, facts, and rational thinking dominate. Between these two sides lies a bridge.

Visualise yourself stepping onto the bridge. As you walk slowly across, notice how the emotions from Emotion Mind and the logic from Reasonable Mind begin to merge. Feel the balance forming within you as you move closer to the center of the bridge. When you reach the middle, pause for a moment. Here, in this balanced spot, both your emotions and logic are working together in harmony. This is where you access your Wise Mind—a place of clarity, intuition, and inner wisdom.

Spend a few moments in this space, reflecting on a situation or decision you’re facing. Allow the calm, balanced perspective of your Wise Mind to guide you. When you’re ready, gently return to your starting point, carrying the insight and balance you’ve gained back with you into your daily life.
